Here’s a quick overview of what to expect on your session:

  1. Your healthcare professional will ask you a few simple questions to understand more about your general health and the health of your ears.
  2. Next, they’ll check your ear canals and ear drums using a magnifier with a light, called an otoscope.
  3. They’ll carefully walk you through the procedure to you, answer any questions you might have, and ask you to sign a consent form.
  4. Finally, they will gently remove the wax using microsuction.
  5. Once done, they’ll tell you about any follow-up steps needed and answer any questions you might have.

That’s it – your ears are now as clean as a whistle.

Frequently asked questions

Not at all, microsuction is usually very comfortable. Some patients notice mild noise or pressure, but it shouldn’t be painful.

Appointments usually take between 20-30 minutes depending on the amount and consistency of wax.

Ear wax removal is no longer available on the NHS, so we’ve made our service as affordable and accessible as possible, with fast appointments for quick relief.

In many cases, microsuction can be performed without drops. But if your wax is very hard, we may ask you to use some olive oil drops and book a follow-up visit.

Ear syringing removes wax by pushing water into the ear canal to flush it out. But it can sometimes cause problems, especially if too much pressure is used. Because of the risks, ear syringing (water irrigation) is no longer recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and we don’t offer it.

Microsuction is a safer, more controlled method that uses gentle suction and clear magnification to remove wax carefully, without water.

Yes, that’s no problem. Microsuction is often the safest option for patients with perforations or previous ear surgery – but we’ll talk to you beforehand to check it’s right for you.

If wax is causing hearing loss, removal often results in improvement straight away.

Ear wax (cerumen) plays an important role in protecting your ears. It helps trap dust, debris, and bacteria, preventing them from reaching the delicate structures of the ear canal and eardrum. But sometimes, when too much wax builds up, it can cause problems. Excessive or impacted ear wax may lead to:

● A feeling of blocked or full ears
● Itchiness, discomfort or earache
● Coughing
● Reduced hearing or sudden hearing loss
● Tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ears)
● Dizziness or balance issues

People who wear hearing aids or ear buds can experience wax build-up more often, as these devices can push wax deeper into the ear canal and affect sound quality or device performance.

There is no legal requirement in the UK for someone to be qualified to offer ear wax removal services, meaning some providers may not have appropriate training or clinical experience.

At The Hearing People:

● All ear wax removal is carried out by fully qualified hearing healthcare professionals
● We follow strict clinical safety protocols
● We use approved medical equipment and techniques

You can, but we strongly advise against removing ear wax at home. Cotton buds, ear candles, and DIY tools can:

● Push wax deeper into the ear
● Damage the ear canal or eardrum
● Cause infections or bleeding
● Lead to permanent hearing damage

Professional assessment and removal is the safest way to protect your hearing.
